Some people say leaders are born, others say they're created by circumstance. I think there's also a good possibility a lot of people, like the fictional character Indiana Jones, just make it up as they go along. For many entrepreneurs, after all, leadership is a remote concept. Many become business owners because they couldn't fit into anyone else's system; but being a bad follower doesn't make you a good leader. As well, many entrepreneurs today launch their businesses not as leaders of teams, but as a do-it-yourself team of one.
Many entrepreneurs are leaders only because of the position they hold -- not by nature and certainly not by virtue of their deeds. I've met many who have never given a thought to leadership, and wouldn't know how to lead if Winston Churchill gave them a full-day seminar on the topic.
So for all those non-leaders, what is leadership? Here's my do-and-don't analysis:
