Baithak Desi May 12: Justice Abbasi's Hara-Kari, Headlines, Cartoons

I wonder about the intellectual rigor of the current Supreme Court Justices - perhaps unfairly. Justice Abbasi who took the suo moto action AND presided over the court is definitely out of order. One needs not be a matriculate even to know about "conflict of interest" inherent in this. And at the level of the apex court it makes a mockery of Judiciary.

The media circus, led by M/s Hamid Mir, Ansar Abbasi, Mazhar Haw & Co. is already having a field day.

I predict they will use Justice Abbasi to beat all those who oppose the restoration of Iftikhar Chaudhry's reign at the court.

ISLAMABAD: The most popular television channel in Pakistan, Geo Television Network, has been asked not to air any program on the issue of the reinstatement of the deposed judges and not to make a mention in this regard. It merits a mention here that Geo TV has been airing comprehensive debates and special news bulletins to inform its viewers about the removal of the superior courts judges and the treatment meted out to them. It is learnt that the Geo management has been conveyed about the government's annoyance with the favorite programs of the television including 'Meray Mutabiq' of Dr Shahid Masood, 'Capital Talk' of Hamid Mir,'Ham Sub Umeed Say Hain', and debates including Ansar Abbasi and four other journalists. Not only this, the government quarters have also expressed their dissatisfaction over reporting by correspondents and analysts of 'The News' and 'Jang'. Geo asked not to air program on judges

Geo TV's Dr Shahid Masood from Dubai explained as to why he focused on Rehman Malik in his popular programme 'Meray Mutabiq' on Saturday night. Dr Shahid said that during his last visit to Islamabad, he got a plain warning from Rehman Malik in the presence of Asif Ali Zardari. "The situation is really scary," he said, adding that Rehman Malik talked of his "punches" to respond to the "punches" of the media. Malik, he said, introduced himself as the establishment and the master of all the intelligence agencies. "Honestly, it was shocking for me," Dr Shahid said, adding that Benazir Bhutto had done a lot to support the cause of the independent media, particularly after Nov 3, 2007 but things had now changed altogether. Why another crackdown on media is round the
