Siddiqui: How the Harperites are eroding one of Canda's foundational pillars - "In Canada, men and women are equal under the law," the guide begins calmly, before abruptly switching into stridency: "Canada's openness and generosity do not extend to barbaric cultural practices that tolerate spousal abuse, `honour killings,' female genital mutilation or other gender-based violence." There are no similar denunciations of other egregious violations of the law. The guide, directed at immigrants, does not say, for example, that "Canada's openness and generosity do not extend to barbaric crimes of passion, such as shooting your unfaithful wife dead" – far more common in Canada than so-called honour killings (dozens vs. three, since 2003).
