Syed Saleem Shahzad, Paul Krugman, Silver Mismatch, Culture cleansing,

Dire words from Syed Saleem Shahzad: In all likelihood, the latest offensive will be much like Operation Rah-e-Haq (2007-08) in the Swat Valley, where the militants weathered the storm and emerged stronger than ever. Once the refugees return home, the militants will take up arms again for more pitched battles.

The American economy remains in dire straits, with one worker in six unemployed or underemployed. Yet Goldman Sachs just reported record quarterly profits — and it’s preparing to hand out huge bonuses, comparable to what it was paying before the crisis. What does this contrast tell us? First, it tells us that Goldman is very good at what it does. Unfortunately, what it does is bad for America. Paul Krugman

And since this is after decades of dis-hoarding of strategic stockpiles, the result is that "Today, most of the US silver stockpile is gone," and whereas "the world once had about 2.2 billion ounces of silver above ground," now there are "only about 300 million ounces. In other words, total world silver supply has plummeted by over 86% just in the last few years ... while silver demand has gone UP!" I know you won't listen to me, since you never have, and all I ever hear is how you are sick of hearing me tell you to buy silver and gold, for one reason, protection against the inexorable predations of a ravenous, sick government, and secondly to make money with silver since the supply/demand imbalance is (as we professional economists term it) So Preposterously Out Of Whack (SPOOW), and you are always asking, "If you're so smart, how come you are just a lonely, pathetic little man who locks himself in the closet under the stairs because he is so scared of everything?" Nazareth: Thousands of road signs are the latest front in Israel’s battle to erase Arab heritage from much of the Holy Land.Israel Katz, the transport minister, announced this week that signs on all major roads in Israel, East Jerusalem and possibly parts of the West Bank would be “standardised”, converting English and Arabic place names into straight transliterations of the Hebrew name.Currently, road signs include the place name as it is traditionally rendered in all three languages.Under the new scheme, the Arab identity of important Palestinian communities will be obscured: Jerusalem, or “al Quds” in Arabic, will be Hebraised to “Yerushalayim”; Nazareth, or “al Nasra” in Arabic, the city of Jesus’s childhood, will become “Natzrat”; and Jaffa, the port city after which Palestine’s oranges were named, will be “Yafo”.
