Musharraf: let’s move beyond burden of history

“We have to resolve Kashmir. Kashmir remains a key dispute. The resolution of dispute means give and take.”

“We should also address the core issues of terrorism and extremism together. We have to have a clear and realistic understanding of the root causes of terrorism. Addressing the root causes of terrorism holds the key,” the former Pakistan President said.

“...We should have the courage and wisdom to write a new chapter in peace and mutually beneficial cooperation. Pakistan can’t be coerced; they can’t live with coercion. India has to show magnanimity and humility. One can’t be a large country with a small heart,” he said.

“I stand for peace for the sake of our future generations to whom we owe a better life and a better environment.”

He claimed that India’s Research and Analysis Wing was helping militants based in Afghanistan to spread trouble in Pakistan.

“We have to accept the reality. Your RAW does exactly what the ISI does. My request is let us tackle RAW and ISI stop this confrontation.”

I would probably find this easier to stomach coming from someone who wasn't the architect of the Kargil fiasco. But Mush makes some good point; I like his quote about big countries needing big hearts. India has too often been petty and mean-minded in dealing with its smaller neighbours. This needs to change.

As for RAW - I wish it were that efficient. ISI does the job laid out for it very well; RAW has in reality been used by the central govt to suppress domestic dissidents and monitor/undermine/bribe the political opposition. Most of their time goes in political intriguing of this sort. Very little time or attention is given to external covert operations and what is relies on bascially giving money to third parties to get things done. ISI is much more formidable in this regard since they actually their role as an intelligence agency seriously and do the hard leg work.
