Baithak Desi May 04: Turkish Schools, Najam Sethi, Naeem Chisti, Humayoun Gohar, Allama Iqbal, AJ, Gilani 1973, Nadeem Paracha

KARACHI, Pakistan — Praying in Pakistan has not been easy for Mesut Kacmaz, a Muslim teacher from Turkey. He tried the mosque near his house, but it had Israeli and Danish flags painted on the floor for people to step on. The mosque near where he works warned him never to return wearing a tie. Pakistanis everywhere assume he is not Muslim because he has no beard.“Kill, fight, shoot,” Mr. Kacmaz said. “This is a misinterpretation of Islam." No restoration of judges on May 12: Musharraf ‘may agree’ to dilute his powers
* Use of Article 58 (2b) to be subject to SC approval
* Governors to be appointed on PM’s advice
* President not ready to relinquish powers to appoint services chiefs
* President wants NSC to stay
* Legal experts working on constitutional package

By Najam Sethi

LAHORE: President Pervez Musharraf has indicated that he would agree to a constitutional package to restore the judges and also empower the prime minister in significant ways by diluting some of his (president’s) powers provided he was allowed to stay on with dignity and decide upon his time and method of departure in the medium term himself, highly-placed sources told Daily Times on Saturday.

Quotable quote: Zardari is a shrewd politician. His ten years active espousal with Benazir Bhutto and eleven years passive ‘training’ in different prisons has mastered him in the art of politics. - Naeem Chisti

The inescapable conclusion is that the Zardari-Nawaz coalition is over and Nawaz is only crafting a high moral ground on which to quit to use as a populist political platform in opposition. While it might seem that Zardari is the more mature of the two, Nawaz is actually playing a very clever game, provided that he knows that he is playing it and what he is playing at. Nawaz should know that his best bet is to play populism to the hilt. As the new government is unable to find solutions to Pakistan's multifarious problems, an increasingly desperate people will swallow any promise and Nawaz's popularity will grow incrementally. He could then win the next elections. ...The problem is that all his seats would come from the Punjab and Pakistan's parochial and ethnic polarization would be complete. That can only lead to bad things. What a mess! But, again, you never know. The people of other provinces will become desperate too. If Nawaz plays his cards right - and it seems that right now he holds most of them - he could also find support in other provinces. Humayun Gauhar

How to create jobs: Govt splits ministries for new members

Never mind the whiners and the losers who are always complaining. “No electricity,” “No water,” “No jobs,” “So much crime,” “hai, kya hoga?” Well, boo-hoo! Can’t these people ever rise above the petty issues and understand the importance of the bigger issues at stake? Issues like the restoration of judiciary, conspiracies against Islam ... and the Indian Premier League! Yes, that too. Naseem Ashraf said so. Democracy is about higher goals and wider ideals. It requires sacrifices. A two-ton imported Australian cow being slaughtered on Baqra Eid is one such sacrifice. So what if the cow’s weight is more than the combined weight of the hundreds of bhookay, nangay kids who gather around the cow to see it being sacrificed. It is good for Islam and good for democracy. The Muree Declaration said so. Nadeem .F.Paracha

Does he know the Ahmedis were Muslims then?
