in life's travail
                     we stumbled 
from smile to smile
                      as youth faded
lines and scars appeared
furtively at first
well entrenched later
                      along this march
smiles appeared sparsely

today our world is lightless grey
                      we ambulate the lanes 
of Memoryville and when
                     we encounter
even a wayward smile
                      momentarily 
our existence lits up
