Poessay: Rosary 6 - Dinner In The Park
maneuvering
between gaudily
chromed rickshaws
smoke spewing buses
taxis and suzuki vans
and people, stiff
in sub compacts
driven by
uniformed chauffeurs
windows tinted dark
running out of patience
took the first turn left
and that street
looked vaguely familiar
passed by a freshly painted wall
then it registered
where did that jamun tree go
the walls were low then
people friendly
when beneath the jamun's shade
we had locked eyes first
she of quiet grace and words few
she of that ready smile and zest
cosmic sitar played its tune
the jamun danced
it faced the vagaries
heat, drought, neglect
fetched only what it needed
providing sanctuary and shade
till it succumbed
to twisted insensibility
of concrete sprawl
the walls grow taller
now they incarcerate
each inhabitant - a prisoner
hostile, fearful, suspicious
here, in the 'burbs we have no walls
yet we do not know our neighbours
