Mian Nawaz Sharif was a member of that coterie and quickly established his credentials as one of the leading opportunists who could easily change his political philosophy without much commitment or hindrance. The Sharif family prospered and established their credentials not only as successful businessmen but also as the rising stars in the uncertain atmosphere of Pakistani politics. The family prospered further when Nawaz Sharif was chosen to become the Chief Minister of Punjab by dictator Zia ul Haq who was impressed by the services of the elder Sharif for the military junta.
As Chief Minister Nawaz Sharif hit the headlines when he was intercepted on one of the main streets of Lahore with a popular folk singer that exposed his human side that continued later on after he became Prime Minister.
As Chief Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif bended the rules to acquire unprecedented financial powers and raised retrospectively the discretionary grant of the Chief Minister from Rs.100, 000 to without limit because by that time he had overspent to the tune of Rs.80 million and to obtain the approval of the governor he accommodated to a political position a near relative of the then governor against all accepted norms.
Another story that hit the headlines about Mian Nawaz Sharif came when the cooperative scandal broke out and the entire Punjab finance department had to spend lengthy hours counting currency notes that were kept at the residence of the Sharifs’ for unknown reasons when they redeposited the money back for the rightful owners. Mian Nawaz Sharif incarcerated a reporter who published the story about the Prime Minister singing a song to an Indian actress while traveling from Karachi to Islamabad and also his directions to the Chief Secretary Punjab to sort out ‘erring’ journalists who were writing critical stories about him.
More recently the story about Mr. Sharif’s exile to Saudi Arabia was enveloped in controversy because of his consistent denials that he had left Pakistan after an arrangement but was forced to eat crow when documents to the contrary were discovered by the media.
These stories would refresh the memories of Pakistanis keeping in view the present posture of Mian Nawaz Sharif now that the critical issue of Presedential elections has gripped the attention of the entire country. Mian Nawaz Sharif has accused Pakistan Peoples Party for reneging of commitments and deceiving PML (N) on certain issues in spite the fact that PML (N) has history of changing their stand more frequently than any other party in the country.
To find an answer one has to talk with Qazi Hussein Ahmed of Jamat-e-Islami who bitterly complains about Nawaz Sharif’s commitment to APDM to boycott the elections but went back on his words at the last minute and participated in the general elections. The JI chief also complains that Nawaz Sharif made a solemn commitment with the nation that they will not allow any reprieve to General Pervez Musharraf but due to political expediency has now declared that he will have no objection in case Musharraf was allowed to go scot-free.
