Mediawatch Desi Apr 09: Dr. Sher Afgun Niazi Assaulted, Aitezaz Ahsan, Justice Tarir Mahmood, Sawn, Daily Times, Najam Sethi, Kurd, FP, Nation, MQM...
I wrote this yesterday as the Lahore travesty was unfolding live on TV: Justice Tariq Mahmood is bristling with indignation. He just said on ARY this one incident has white washed all the efforts of the lawyers since March 09, 2007. He was commenting on what the lawyers are doing to former minister Dr.Sher Afgun Niazi. The lawyers forced him into a room and pelted him with eggs and shoes. Aitezaz Ahsan offered to escort him out of the building, pleaded with the lawyers to cease and desist from violence. He purportedly told them not to take the law into their hands.
The ambulance with Dr. Niazi inside and Aitezaz Ahsan standing over its roof could not dissuade the lawyers to use it as a target. It has been reported that the glasses of the ambulance were broken, as it was pelted with eggs, shoes, and stones and protesters reached into the ambulance to hit upon Dr. Niazi.
Over twelve hours have passed by since this incident and Rehman Malik has announced a "full" investigation. Spinners from all sides are in full swing.
The most prominent among them are defending the lawyers, against all odds, by saying "others" created the ruckus. Who are these "others" - the men in white - and they point fingers at Musharraf and his supporters. Even Aitezaz Ahsan has stooped to hint at "other" forces in a later interview.
The former president of the SC bar association and retired Justice Tariq Mahmud elevated himself mile high by his admission and condemnation of the lawyers behaviour. Along with him, Nawai Waqt, Najam Sethi and many senior journalists who were present at the Lahore travesty also admitted that they recognised several prominent Lahore lawyers leading the violent protests.

Earlier I had asked this query: The Lawyers have been out on the street since March 09, 2007 and have boycotted Courts. While all praise is due their steadfastness the query remains, how are they paying their rents and grocery bills? Who is financing them? Not all of them are independently wealthy.

UPDATE: ARY TV reports that Aitezaz Ahsan has resigned as President of the SC Bar Association. Changes his mind?
And this quote by Aitezaz from the Daily News: He said the incident was completely engineered by the agencies as there were only 50 per cent lawyers “when I asked them to raise their hands as an oath not to attack Dr Sher Afgan when he would come out.” He said there were 50 per cent other people who had perpetrated this violent act against Sher Afgan.
‘Today blackest day of my life,’ says Tariq Mehmood KARACHI: Justice (rtd) Tariq Mehmood condemned the manhandling of former MNAs Dr Sher Afgan Khan Niazi in Lahore in strong words.Talking to Geo News, he said this is the blackest day of his life and it should be condemned as much as possible, adding lawyer movement is old-dated, as it was waged also in Ayub Khan’s time. He continued, ‘However, today is the most black and shameful day of my life, which has caused all of us to be disgraced.’ Tariq Mehmood said manhandling Dr Sher Afgan Khan Niazi was extremely unethical and unconstitutional act, which should be condemned to the most. ‘The people who ill-treated Sher Afgan, actually punished us not Sher Afgan alone and destroyed our love and credibility with the people,’ he said.‘How can we show our face; these people who manhandled Sher Afgan, cast a slur on us,’ Justice Tariq Mehmood added.
