Mediawatch Desi Apr 04: Shoaib Saga, Zardari Snubs Aitezaz Over Judges, Ayaz Amir

CHANDIGARH: Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq on Thursday justified the five-year ban imposed on Shoaib Akhtar, saying the controversial fast bowler had been asking for trouble for quite some time now. "The Pakistan Cricket Board seems to have taken the decision after careful thought. I don't think they have hurried into making this decision," Inzamam, who is leading Lahore Badshahs in the Indian Cricket League, said. Inzamam justifies PCB ban on Shoaib Akhtar.

And here is Ejaz Haider's column on the Shoaib Saga.

32 year old
enfante terrible Shoaib Akhtar, better known in recent past for his off field activities is again in the news. Whether he deserves a five year ban or not is not my concern. Let the competent authorities decide that.

I have two observations to make:

1: I dislike the idea of political parties jumping in on this. The nation has far more severe problems they should be working day and night to solve.

2: Shoaib Akhtar is a misfit. He is an individualistic player in a team sport. He has beeen in contempt and in violation for far to many times for a person of his age. He is a disruptive influence on his team mates.

At his age I am not sure if therapy and anger management would be of help to him.

ISLAMABAD, April 3: A draft constitutional package envisages subjecting all judges of the superior judiciary to scrutiny by a parliamentary committee after reinstatement of the judges sent home upon proclamation of the emergency on Nov 3. According to a reliable source, the government had “almost finalised” the “omnibus” constitutional amendment package. “The constitutional package, being finalised with the consent of all the allied parties in the coalition government, is getting the final touches,” the source said. Judges’ scrutiny by parliament panel after reinstatement By Nasir Iqbal. And here is Assad Hamed's view on this from the Nation - 'Iftikhar to be shown door through new law'.

Why only Judges? ALL senior government employees including secretaries and commission chairpersons, semi-government and autonomous
body chiefs should be approved by the relevant parliamentary committees.

PPP Co-chairman Asif Zardari is reported to have ticked off Aitzaz Ahsan in an after-dinner gathering of the PPP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) members in Naudero on the subject of the restoration of the judges, independence of the judiciary and the threatened long march by Aitzaz and his supporters. He told Aitzaz that he was wrong to think that the lawyers movement had forced General Pervez Musharraf to take off his uniform or hold the elections. He said that honour belonged to Benazir Bhutto who had compelled Musharraf to do so and paid for it with her life. Zardari also reminded Aitzaz that while he was incarcerated for eight long years none of these heroic judges had given him justice, even when he had asked for one day’s reprieve to attend a funeral of a close relative. Zardari is reported to have said that Justice Chaudhry had politicised himself overtly and ruined his case as an advocate for an independent judiciary. Aitzaz tried a feeble defence but could not deflect Zardari’s irritation. “I thought Aitzaz would get up and leave but he just sat there,” said the source. staff report.

Hmmmm. Wonder if Aitezaz would prove to be made of tougher mettle than the erstwhile Makhdoom Amin Fahim And here is an olive branch: Zardari offers governorship to Iftikhar Chaudhry

Installed under one of his armpits is a crutch by the name of Siraj Shamsuddin, his principal secretary, working for all appearances for him but reporting--it requiring little imagination to conclude--to Asif Zardari. Under his second armpit we find Rehman Malik, the coalition government's interior czar. Malik is a friend of some standing and in the past has even done me a favour or two but as an Asif confidant he could be too much for Gilani to handle. Friend Hussain Haqqani ('Snake-in-the-grass' Haqqani to some of his admirers) is ambassador-at-large. If Shah Mahmood Qureshi, the new foreign minister, wants elbow room for himself he should ensure that Haqqani, who can add whole new layers of meaning to the word intrigue, gets out of the FO as fast as possible. He is being tipped as our next man in Washington. Power behind the throne is one thing and that Zardari is. But to be constantly tugging at the reins and breathing down the coachman's neck is a slightly different thing. If Gilani is to deliver, if he is not to be a prime minister in the Jamali mould, he should be allowed to be his own man. Ayaz Amir
