Baithak Desi Apr 15: Fozia Wahab, Zardari Warned, Coal is Cool, Nuclear Access, Sixth Schedule, Parveen Shakir

BREAKING: Fozia Wahab in an live interview on ARY told Kashif Abbasi there were NO RAPES in the aftermath of disturbances following Benazir Bhutto's assassination in Sindh.

Hundreds died, billions of rupees were lost, factories and buildings set afire, banks gutted and looted, truck, trailer and cars stolen and burned and women raped. This is for the record.

As a woman, as an MNA, as PPP member and as decent human being she should revisit her statement.

And even as Nawaz may not have had a hand in the rupture of the understanding that was developing between PPP and MQM, mainly because of Asif’s strenuous efforts for the cause of national reconciliation and cohesion, this development must have surely gladdened Nawaz’s heart. A closeness between the two parties could have reduced drastically the PPP’s dependence on his PML (N) to survive in power. This rupture has put paid to that apprehension of Nawaz and created all the space for him to blackmail, manipulate and exploit PPP and its leadership and play his dirty tricks he is so wont to the way he likes. Asif Zardari stands forewarned.

Thar coal fields should be the government’s next watering hole. Gather all the petroleum experts and cart them to the coalmines. "Coal is cool" should be their credo. "It’s the answer to our 40 per cent energy deficit currently resulting in prolonged power cuts," says Musharraf’s former petroleum minister. Usman Aminuddin continues: "Pakistan has the second largest coal reserves in the world after US. Thar is the fifth largest coalfield in the world." As Musharraf’s petroleum minister, Usman did not last for more than three years because of politics and vested interests which began to mine in. He left in a huff. "I am a technocrat, not a politician." Usman introduced the mass use of CNG in Pakistan. It was under his watch that oil was discovered in NWFP for the first time. He resurrected the dead Saindak project which was shut down abruptly in 1996 for lack of working capital. "We earned billions in exports from Saindak which was a rich source in gold and copper. Do you know that Pakistan has the second largest copper deposits in the world after Chile?" Warming up to the theme: ‘What is it that Pakistan does not have?’ Usman says "We produce 16 major minerals in the world. We’re the only country that has pink topaz!" Coal is Cool - Anjum Niaz

ISLAMABAD: Amid western concerns about the safety of Pakistan's nuclear arsenal, the United States has sought direct access to the body controlling the country's nuclear assets. ( Watch: Bush seeks direct access to Pak nukes ) The US has asked for an American official to be posted at its embassy here. The US State Department sent a proposal to the Pakistan government after a set of 11 demands dispatched earlier by Washington to Islamabad regarding the deployment of American military personnel in the country, were refused by Pakistani authorities. The latest request from Washington had suggested that the official who would be permanently posted in the US embassy here to deal with nuclear issues should have direct access to the National Command Authority (NCA) Secretariat, The News reported on Monday. The earlier request had wanted American citizens sent by the US government to be treated above Pakistan's national law. US seeks direct access to Pak's nuke arsenal

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) would repeal the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution in the upcoming constitutional package to make amendments to the laws protected in the schedule, The News has learnt. Sources told The News that the party wanted changes in the local government system and the police order and was also in the mood of abolishing the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) but these ordinances have been given protection in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, which says that the laws given protection in the schedule cannot be altered or repealed without prior consent of the president. Therefore, the PPP was mulling over repealing the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution instead of begging permission from President Pervez Musha-rraf. Sources said the only option left with the PPP was either to repeal the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution or exempt the required laws to be amended from the schedule. The Sixth Schedule protects the National Accountability Ordinance 1999, the Local Government Ordinance 2001, the Police Order 2002, the Election Commission Order 2002, the Political Parties Order 2002 and the Qualification to Hold Public Offices Order 2002 which was focused at barring Nawaz Sharif and slain PPP chairperson Ms Benazir Bhutto to become Prime Minister for third time. Sixth Schedule may be repealed
