Baithak Desi Apr 14: Zardari and IG Sindh and Punjab, Dichotomy in Judicial Investigations, Nawaz Sharif, Bhulle Shah

Zardari may have finessed Nawaz Sharif. Did he finesse Altaf Hussain? The next few weeks would tell.

Karachi is the economic engine of the nation and this is not the 90s. After Nasirullah Babar, the alleged butcher of thousands of Mohajirs killed in cold blooded "encounters" in mid 90s, Shoaib Suddle is the second most hated person for the MQM. By bringing him in as the new DIG of Sindh Zardari certainly gave a signal. Suddle was in charge of the security in Karachi when Murteza Bhutto was murdered. That Zardari is a sharp operator is evident in Punjab too, where he is blocking Rana Maqbool's appointment as IGP.

If he indeed did finesse Altaf Hussain, then perhaps he may have bitten too much. The Suddle appointment, return of Rao Anwar, withdrawal of police protection from 90 and MPAs and MNAs are certainly not the smoke signals that will be seen as "peace smoke."

Dawn, Editorial, Nation, Shazi Murri "Minor issue", News, Sherry Rahman, Another Blogger on Suddle,

And this should ring alarm bells too. Sindh burned for days after the Benazir Assassination in Islamabad. Hundreds of women were raped, thousands of cars and trucks were stolen and burned, hundred lost their lives, factories and buildings were torched, banks looted. And this is the incredible first act of the new government in Sind? Sindh cabinet withdraws all Dec 27 riot cases

And almost in the same breadth the "Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza said that the Nishtar Park bomb blast, last year’s May 12 violence and October 18 blasts, and other incidents of terrorism would be reinvestigated. May 12 violence to be reinvestigated, says Mirza

And without hinting at either of the previous new items the News says in its editorial:

Perhaps, more importantly, it is important for the government to remember the need, at all costs, to retain credibility. Rhetoric and pretences fool no one today..... While there is an immense need to quell the lawlessness we see everywhere, success in this task can come only by engaging people in dialogue, keeping the line of communication open and building trust. A resort to deception will result only in public confidence in the government eroding, and this is a factor the new government must keep in mind.

LAHORE: Muslim League-N (ML-N) chief, Mian Nawaz Sharif, while turning down the government security offer involving an expenditure of over Rs30 million from the exchequer, said that he didn’t consider it proper spending such a big amount from the exchequer for his security. Mian Nawaz Sharif rejecting the offer said that President Musharraf’s wrong policies have made every Pakistani insecure, but he didn’t consider it proper spending such a huge amount from the government exchequer for his personal security.
